Hair Carnival: Halloween 2011

So it has come time again to share with you a Hair Carnival. We have done quite a few Hair Carnivals this month cause there has been so many great things going on that we had a lot to share. Des has had quite an active Halloween season this year. She attended a costume party, a costume contest at school and of course Halloween night itself. Needless to say she definitely wore her costume and wore it well. Well with that comes doing hair "to go with" the costume.

The first time she wore her costume she was going to a party and on this particular day her plate was full. So she had to have a style that would work well with all the events going on on the day of. The first part of the day she wore a twist out and then when we had a chance we did an upside down french braid that we put into a pony tail holder. Des wanted to use two different types of ribbon so we did. The first ribbon I cut into two different lengths and just placed it through the ouchless ponytail holder so that it could just hang down. The second ribbon I used, purple and black zebra print, to do a mummy braid on half of the hair in ponytail. The other half of her hair in the ponytail I put into twist and then twisted them around the mummy braid into a bun. I used hair pins to hold the bun in place. Des of course wanted to wear make up with her costume so we put on some eye shadow, eyeliner, and lip gloss. She look so pretty when she was done.

The night before Halloween we decided we were going to try to do her hair to look like a bat. We braided the edges in the shape of the wings with the different sections of the wing separated with braids which we then wrapped ribbon around. The sections of loose hair we just smoothed out and gathered in to a ponytail at the top of her head were they all met. We took that ponytail and divided it; the loose hair became for the body of the bat and the braids became the head of the bat. We left out a section for a twisted out bang and also a small area for the ears of the bat. I realized after it was all done that you couldn't really tell it was a bat cause it went around her whole head but oh well. Des liked it and it was a good learning experience for me.

The morning of Halloween before school we got up and did makeup again for Des to wear to school off she went. I also to the bantu knot of twists down so she could wear bands.When she got out of school her makeup was pretty much off her eyes, not sure how, LOL.

Oh well, we did makeup again and wet her bangs, cause they got poofy at school. Off we went to "Trunk or Treat" at church followed by trick or treating in the neighborhood. We had fun, her big brothers tagged along with us and although they won't admit it, they had fun too. 

I enjoy these times since Des seems to be growing so fast. I hope that she will only be wearing makeup for Halloween for many more years too come... LOL.

Flat Twist Faux Hawk...

Des is getting older and with that comes changes in her idea of what is cute and what is not. I do miss using knockers (ballies), barrettes, and beads so when she says she wants to use these things I get excited. In this particular style we did something we had never done before and put beads at her roots as well as on the ends.

I did this style in April so I did not take step by step pictures of how I placed the beads at her roots, I will do my best to explain. I used Silk Elements MegaSilk Leave-In Hair Moisturizing Creme on damp hair. I used to use this when Des was younger cause I could find it locally and the ingredients we not too bad. I wanted to see how it performed on her hair now cause it has been years since I have used it.

I parted a section in the front of her head for a bang, and then I sectioned the rest of her hair straight down the middle from front to back. I then started at the nape of her neck doing horizontal parts, using clips to hold the rest of her hair out of the way.

I parted the hair and took a small section to string the beads onto. Once I got the two beads down by her root I split the section in two and pulled one of the sections between the two beads. I used this section to hold the other bead into place once I started the flat twits. The section of hair I put between the beads held the first bead into place and once I started the flat twist it held the beads in place together. I hope that makes sense.

I continued the flat twist and secured them to the scalp in the middle of her head with rubber bands. Once I finished all her flat twist I did two strand twist on the loose hair in the center of head. I beaded the ends of those twist.

Des picked all the colors of the beads. We enjoyed this style for a good week. At the end of that week, we had a fantastic twist out.

I have a Crush on CUSH Cosmetics...

I was lucky enough to win a CUSH Cosmetics Ultimate Curl Moisture and Protein Sample Pack from a giveaway held on Untrained Hair Mom back in June. I was so excited I couldn't wait to use these products on our next style which wasn't till the middle part of July cause life is crazy.

First off we used the Mango Babassu Shampoo Bar, I have mixed reviews on this bar but I think it has more to do with the length of Des' hair in relation to the size of the bar we received. Des said it bothered her to have me rub it to the different sections of her scalp. I will say that it lathered enough and rinsed easily once applied. Des' hair felt clean without feeling stripped.

The next product I used was Moisturize Me to detangle her hair and get it ready to be styled. The Moisturize Me provide the slip and moisture I needed to detangle her hair. This process can take a while at times cause of the length of her hair but it didn't take near as long using this in her hair.

Des and I decided to do a freestyle flat twist style leading to two strand twist. I parted her hair from ear to ear and as I made the parts for the flat twists I applied some of the Mango Pomade to my fingers to aid me. I only used Mango Pomade on the section I did the flat twist on. I found that she didn't have flyaways once her hair dried like she typically does. Below are pics of her flat twist:

On the back of her hair, I did apply some Curl Extender to aid me in doing her two strand twist. I did twists on the whole back portion of her hair. I love the way the twists looked and held up. Typically I have to use rubber bands on the ends of her hair to make her twist stay but I found that this time I did not. These twists lasted a week before we took down for a twist out in the back of her hair. The front of her hair stayed until we got tired of this particular style.
